Grand hotel Karel V
The beginning
In 1348 the Knightly German Order commissioned the construction of the monastery “De Balije van Utrecht”. From what was soon called the German House, Crusaders went to the East to bring ‘the heathens’ to faith.
Emperor Karel V, ruler of Europe’s largest ever empire, attended the meeting of The Order of The Golden Fleece here in 1543. This made him the most prominent guest in the monastery and the hotel is named after him.
