OUR VENUES

Karel 5 Gastro Bistro Events offers plenary meeting venues with breakout rooms to break the flow when the concentration lapses or an important message has been received. We offer a range of rooms and venues of different shapes and sizes with a capacity of up to 150 persons. We can seat up to 135 persons for dinner. Restaurant Karel 5 and Bistro Karel 5 each have an own terrace.

650 YEARS OF HISTORY

Grand Hotel Karel V in its various shapes and forms has welcomed many of the rich and famous of days of ere, such as Charles V, Mary of Hungary, Louis Napoleon, and the Spanish Envoy, the Duke of Osuna.

GULDEN VLIES ROOM

The “Gulden Vlies” Room was named after the Chapter Meeting of the “Gulden Vlies”, for which Charles V stayed in the German House for a period of time. Dating 1450, the room is located in the tower vault and formerly served as the safety vault of the Order of the Teutonic Knights, archives, and dungeon.

LODEWIJK NAPOLEON ROOM

The “Lodewijk Napoleon” Room is decorated in the Empire style and is an attractive ambience for a meeting or dinner in Utrecht. The room owes its name to Louis Napoleon, King and brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, who bought the German House in 1806.

ANNA VAN OOSTENRIJK ROOM

This room, with the original timber beam ceiling, the mirrors, and the chandeliers, oozes style and opulence. This is the “Anna van Oostenrijk” Room.

UNICO VAN WASSENAER ROOM

Unico van Wassenaer, whose name was lent to one of the wards in the former military hospital, was a retired land commander, a composer, and a musician, who published under a pen name. The room features a remarkable, 14th century arch construction of Scandinavian oak dating 1347.

MARIA VAN HONGARIJE ROOM

The “Maria van Hongarije” Room breathes style and prestige with its marble floor, original ceiling with exposed beams, chandeliers, and remarkable fireplace. Mary of Hungary was Governess of the Netherlands and sister of Charles V.

GRAAF VAN LEICESTER ROOM

In the year 1585, Elizabeth I of Great Britain sent the Earl of Leicester with 6,000 men across the North Sea to abort the advance of the Spanish. He was a party animal: prior to his arrival, no fewer than 22 kegs of beer were ordered. The “Graaf van Leicester” room is very light, and perfectly equipped to host a smashing party, today!

GRAVIN VAN MEURS

Countess Johanna van Meurs was one of the longest staying guests to ever visit us here at Karel V. We have honoured the Countess’ presence, in naming the “Gravin van Meurs” room after her. It is a cosy meeting room, located in the “Boerderij” (farmhouse) in the Monastery’s courtyard.

GRAAF VAN EGMOND ROOM

The “Graaf van Egmond” room is a pleasant, light-filled meeting room in our “Boerderij” (farmhouse), named after Lamoraal van Egmond, statesman and general of the Seventeen Provinces at the start of the Eighty-Years’ War.

GRAAF JAN VAN NASSAU

This intimate meeting room is located in the “Boerderij” (farmhouse) in the courtyard. The room is named after the founder of the Union of Utrecht: Jan van Nassau, younger brother of William of Orange and progenitor of today’s House of Orange.

GRAAF WILLEM IV

The “Graaf Willem IV” room is an attractive, light-filled room in the farmhouse in our courtyard. The room is quite suited to workshops and meetings. Count Willem IV, also known as ‘William the Bold’, was born in 1317, as the Count of Holland and Zeeland.

HERTOG VAN BRUNSWIJK

Housed in the main building complex this small meeting room with its delicate light was named after the Duke of Brunswijk, Military Governor of Den Bosch from 1751 to 1784.

HERTOG VAN ALVA ROOM

The “Hertog van Alva” room is an attractive meeting room, in the main building complex, with a special light. A municipal drawing from the Utrecht Archives is displayed on a wall. The wall can be removed to create the king-size “Hertogen” room.

The “Hertogen” room is an attractive meeting venue with a large presentation screen. The “Hertogen” is created by merging the “Hertog van Brunswijk” with the “Hertog van Alva”. The skylights built into the ceiling draw ample daylight which helps keeping focus and activity up during a meeting.

DE GRAANZOLDER

Our ‘graanzolder’ (or corn loft) is a cozy place for a reception and aperitif. It is also an ideal place for a coffee break during a meeting in the next door meeting rooms. In the past this place was a storage room for the corn that was used to brew the monastery beer.
