The classic style of this centuries-old monastery is reflected in different types of rooms and suites. Several of the rooms and suites have views of the canal, the gardens or Utrecht’s ‘domtoren’. Our high-quality beds make your stay even more pleasant. During your stay, it is also possible to make use of the wellness or fitness.


The rooms on this side have a modern touch and were added later than those in the monumental part of the hotel. The Comfort rooms have a King Bed of 180x200cm, are equipped with a desk to work undisturbed and are for double use only.  This room type has been renovated in 2023.

COMFORT Room with balcony

These newly renovated Comfort rooms are located in the later annexed part of the hotel and feature a beautiful balcony. They offer a generous 180x200cm King Bed, a place to work and are designed exclusively for two people. These rooms have been completely refurbished in the year 2023.

Deluxe Room

The Deluxe Rooms have a view of our beautiful courtyard garden or an exceptional view of Utrecht’s ‘Domtoren’. These rooms have recently been through a soft renovation (2022) and are equipped with a sitting area, unique interior, royal canopy bed with a 180x200cm double mattress.

Deluxe Split-level room

These special, spacious and luxurious rooms have a loft. The rooms with stunning views of the courtyard garden and ‘domtoren’ were recently renovated (2022). The rooms have a modern touch and were added later than the rooms in the monumental part of the hotel.

Empire Room

With the high ceilings, many windows and large surface area of the rooms, you immediately feel like you are in a royal environment. The interior is classic with cherry wood furniture, a stylish wooden floor and a timeless four-poster bed, completely in keeping with the hotel’s historical character.


The Cozy Wooden Empire rooms are located on the top floor, where the original wooden beams of the listed building are still visible. These characteristic rooms feature a spacious bathroom with separate shower and bathtub. The interior is classic with cherry wood furniture and stylish wooden flooring.


The beautiful and classic Empire Executive rooms are located in the Napoleonic wing, also known as the former military hospital. The high ceilings, many windows and large surface area of the rooms, you immediately feel like you are in a regal setting. Is there WiFi available in the hotel rooms?

There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Just accept the terms and conditions and you will be connected to the internet.

Can I have an extra bed in the room?

It is possible to book this before arrival.

If you wish to book a cot, please contact us by phone or e-mail. A cot will be placed in the room free of charge. This is possible for children up to 2 years old. Please note, baby cots cannot be placed in every room type for safety reasons.

An additional bed can be booked for children aged 3 to 12 years or guests over 12 years old.

The charge for an extra bed is €40 per day. This is upon request and only possible on the Empire Room and Suites.

What is the check-in policy?

From 15:00 your room will be ready and you are welcome at Grand Hotel Karel V.

If the occasion arises that you arrive earlier and the room is not ready yet, you can already leave your luggage with our porter and check in. In the meantime, you could still explore the city!

What is the check-out policy?

You can use the room until 12:00.

If you would like to check out later, this is subject to availability. You can extend your use of the room free of charge until 13:00 – 14:00.

Can I check out later?

A late check-out is possible based on availability for 50% of the room rate. If the late check-out is after 6pm, we will charge the full room rate.

On Sundays and public holidays, you can book our Lazy Sunday package for €25 upon availability. The Lazy Sunday package allows you to check-out until 5pm.

Can I inform you of my room preference?

If you have a preference such as a quiet room, garden view, cathedral tower view, high/low floor or a room with balcony, please contact our reservations department.

We can make a note in your reservation of your preference. We will do our best to accommodate your request, however, we cannot guarantee this due to availability.

Is breakfast included with my overnight stay?

Check in your booking if you have booked breakfast. You can also check this if you booked via an online booking site.

Is it not included in your reservation and you still want breakfast? No problem! Breakfast is €26.50 per adult and €15 per child aged 4 to 12, free for children under 4.

I am visiting with my family, can we stay in one room with the whole family?

Grand Hotel Karel V has one family suite, which can accommodate a maximum of four people.

If this family suite is not available, we can look at other options with you. An empire room can be equipped with an extra bed for a maximum of three people.
